The Local Squirrel

About Us

Hey y'all I'm Rachael, owner of The Local Squirrel! I’ve always been interested in community. I’m a firm believer that together, we are stronger and no one person can do it all. It takes a #squad. I remember growing up, day tripping to Savannah from Hilton Head Island. I begged every year for a stop at the SCAD Shop to see the latest group of designers that city had to showcase. I knew this was such a cool concept, even at a young age, highlighting local creatives. I started keeping my eye out for makers I could “collect”. Shoeboxes of business cards filled up and I worked on building relationships.
I attended Meredith College, and stayed active meeting new makers. I remember volunteering at the very first SPARKCon Event in Downtown Raleigh, looking so forward to the vendor tents set up through Moore Square. I graduated, worked for Nordstrom, and started learning retail. Selling, styling, creating visuals, managing, I did it all. After a few years and knowing I was not being creatively fulfilled, I switched things up and enrolled in Art School and focused on Digital Media. I thought my fashion and sales background coupled with strong design skills would land me a dream marketing job. I remember calling agency after agency, taking VP’s and Head’s of Departments to lunch and coffee, having really positive conversations, yet nothing translated to full time work. As you can imagine I was frustrated. An opportunity in Durham surfaced, a new boutique was opening and the owner needed help across the board. I took it, opened her store, got her settled, and realized I would never be happy with my career until I did it for myself. April 2017, I took possession of our humble store in Cameron Village. Construction, painting, and filling the store with curated treats took a month; by Mother’s Day we were open. Those last few days of prep, family and friends rallied and stayed until wee morning hours, labeling products and keeping me laughing. I’ll say it again, it takes a #squad. Since opening we aim to always provide a curated selection of goodies you’ll want to keep for yourself. We love working with local and small business makers. Roughly 70% of the shop's products comes from these guys. We are constantly changing and updating.  You’ll find something new every time you’re in the shop. My hope is The Local Squirrel will become your destination spot to treat yourself and others!
